  • ROOTIKAL – STUDIO ONE SPECIAL with ALCAPONE, WINSTON FRANCIS, ABA SHANTI I ( Studio One selection) 7-4 | Entry: EB £6, ADV £8/£9 | See More

On Saturday the 4th of October, Rootikal hosts it’s annual salute to the legendary Studio One – without doubt the most important Jamaican record label and studio of all time.

As you’d expect, the music policy of the evening is strictly Coxsone Dodd productions and we have PAs from two of the Studio One greats.

The first of which is Winston Francis – AKA King Cool – who started his recording career at Studio One in the late 60s singing the sweetest rocksteady tunes. Winston has given us the stone-cold classics ‘Mr Fix-It’, ‘Groovy Situation’ – a cover of the Gene Chandler soul smash – and the roots anthem ‘Let’s Go To Zion’, all of which were recorded at 13 Brentford Road, and we truly honoured to have him with us on this special night.

We also have the legendary Dennis Alcapone, whose 1971 ‘Forever Version’ LP saw him toast on versions of Coxone-produced hits. Dennis will DJ on some classic rhythms that feature on the album, like The Cables ‘Baby Why’, Carlton and His Shoes ‘Love Me Forever’ and John Holt’s Marshall’s ‘A Love I Can Feel’, before freestyling over the selectors. Again, we’re honoured.

On the guest selector front we have the mighty Aba Shanti I who will be running a 100% Coxsone selection, just as he did at a festival in France a couple of years ago, which has since become legend. This is certainly not something that you see every day.

We also have Studio One specialsts Tiny T and Oxman from Ska Lavin, who will be running a deep selection or rarities and classics, and the Rootikal crew of David Hill, Stuart Patterson and Mr Faso will also be digging into their Studio One baskets.
